There can be no more traditional dessert that pairs better with a wide variety of dishes than a sweet and tart apple crisp (or apple crumble, depending on where you live). Cast Iron Apple crisp is a knock-your-socks-off perfect ending to complement a meal.
While some apples are better for baking than others, this recipe makes no judgement on what tastes better. Our opinion is that if you’d be pleased with taking a big bite out of a juicy apple, then use that apple for the dessert. The aroma of cinnamon-scented apples coming off your grill will have the neighbors running just as fast as if you were cooking the best BBQ on the block!
Cast Iron Apple Crisp
- 5 Apples, peeled and sliced
- ½ cup Brown Sugar
- 3 Tbsp. White Sugar
- 2 tsp. Cinnamon
- 1 stick salted butter
- 1 ½ cup Rolled Oats (not quick oats)
- ¼ cup Flour
- 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
- 1 additional tsp. Cinnamon (for crumble topping)
- Toss apples with White Sugar and Cinnamon. Place apples in 12” cast iron skillet.
- Soften Butter so that it is “spreadable”. NOTE: Many recipes for apple crisp ask you to chill the butter before making the crumble. Trust us here, it is unnecessary.
- In a medium bowl, combine remaining ingredients. Work the mixture with your hands until the topping is thoroughly blended.
- Evenly distribute the oat topping mixture over the apples. Think “rustic” when you put the topping on. There is no need to cover the apples completely, rather simply let it fall where it may.
- Place pan into covered grill on medium heat around 325⁰F and bake for approximately 20-25 minutes or until top begins to brown.
TIP: Serve warm with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream. Your stomach will thank you.
